So the story stands the test of time, and there’s no question as to why it deserves to be collected as an omnibus, but how is the actual collection, and would it be worth it to replace your old paperbacks with his volume? Well, yes… but I’ll share why. Morrison not only tells stories that are conceptually intriguing, but he gives interesting and individual voices to each character featured in the story, including Cliff and Maxine Baker, whom he created.

It’s a seminal piece of work that still stands up as a work of great quality even over twenty-years after it’s publication. Many concepts and story tropes that were introduced in this run would further reappear along in other stories by Morrison, but most notably his cerebral style of storytelling really finds some roots in this series.

Grant Morrison’s run on Animal Man was one of his first american works, and really paved the way for the rest of his work at DC comics. This review isn’t necessarily for the story inside, because we know how I feel about that one already, but for the quality of this book, and whether it’s worth picking up in this format whether it be for the first time or to replace your old paperback volumes. It’s still my favorite for many reasons, and now DC and Vertigo have just recently re-released it in the omnibus format.
